Enjoy a winter vacation like no other in sunny Greece!
If you’re looking for a sunny destination this winter, we highly recommend a trip to Greece, and in particular this self-drive tour of the Peloponnese. Located in the heart of mainland Greece, the temperatures here remain pleasant even in winter. There’s no swimming, of course, but there’s plenty of winter light, sunshine, and Greeks more than willing to meet and talk.
The little extra? You’ll have the archaeological sites all to yourself…or almost. You’ll be right next door to some of the most important cultural sites in the country.
So don’t hesitate, come and enjoy Greece as you’ve never seen it before: truer, more traditional and still with its famous azure blue skies.
You can travel to Greece from December to March during the ski season.

Overnight in a hotel in the center of Athens.
Day 2
Athens - Nafplio
City of Mycenae
Today we’re heading to Nafplio. On the way, we’ll stop at the Corinth Canal, which connects the Peloponnese to the mainland. This impressive cut in the rock is steeped in history. The idea of a canal here has been around for centuries. The idea began with Nero in 67 A.D. and was finally realized in 1893.
Once you’ve passed through the Corinth Canal, you’re heading for ancient Argolid. A peninsula to the east of the Peloponnese, the region is famous for the reign of King Agamemnon and for its beautiful landscapes ranging from pine forests to fields of olive and fruit trees. Arriving in Mycenae, you will visit the archaeological site, rich in history and myth. The site is magical and majestic. It offers a glimpse of the remains of one of Greece’s greatest civilizations, the Mycenaeans, who inspired Homer’s tales. Take time to wander the ruins and visit the Lioness Gate, the Cyclopean Wall, the Palace and the Royal Tombs.
You’ll arrive in Nafplio in the afternoon to soak up the sun on the bay. In the evening, we recommend heading downtown to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the waterfront bars and restaurants.
Distance covered: 130 km – 2 hours’ drive.
Overnight in a hotel in the center of Nafplio.
Day 3
Nafplio - Epidaurus - Nafplio
Epidaurus theatre
Head to Epidaurus and its sublime ancient theater. The site is impressive, but it’s the incredible acoustics that will amaze you the most. You’ll realize how magical the performances must have been, even if you’re sitting in the back row. In fact, if you want, you can always come back in the summer to see one of the summer performances. Contrary to what you might think, the place is not only recommended for its theater, but also for the sanctuary of Asclepius, the ancient god of medicine. Many pilgrims came here to make offerings in the hope of healing or curing a loved one. Learn more about Asclepius at the on-site museum. For lunch we recommend a traditional fish taverna by the sea in Palea Epidauro… freshness guaranteed!
In the afternoon, you’ll return to Nafplio for a tour of the city and its imposing Venetian fortress, where you’ll climb 900 steps for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and its surroundings.
Distance covered: 80 km – 1h30 drive. Overnight in Nafplio, same accommodation as the day before.
Day 4
Nafplio - Kalavrita
Kalavrita
Departure to the northern coast of the Peloponnese and arrival at Kalavrita. At an altitude of over 800 meters, it’s a winter sports resort, popular both in winter and summer, not least because of its coolness. If you’d like to go skiing, there are a dozen slopes waiting for you. Equipment can be rented on the spot. As for the landscape, it’s dominated by the Xelmos Mountains, whose peaks rise to over 2300 m. Kalavrita is also a landmark in modern Greek history, having hosted the meeting of the leaders of the day that led to the country’s independence in 1821. If you don’t feel like spending the afternoon on the slopes, we suggest you discover Greece’s only remaining cogwheel railway. The ride is a timeless experience and the scenery is incredible. The steep gradient between Kalavrita and the lower terminus, Diakoftos, offers magnificent views. The train travels only 22 kilometers between these two stations. That’s why we recommend a stop at Zachlorou for a short hike to the Mega Spiléon Monastery. You can also take a walk to the Vikos gorge. You’ll have to take the train tracks. But don’t worry, there is no danger as the average speed is 20 km/h.
Distance covered: 135 km – 2 hours’ drive. Overnight in a hotel in Kalavrita.
Day 5
Kalavrita - Olympia
Olympia
A magnificent mountain road takes you through the northwestern Peloponnese, skirting valleys and over several passes with snow-capped mountains on the horizon.
Arrive in Olympia in the early afternoon. Start with a visit to the site and its museum. You’ll enjoy walking through the shady ruins and imagining the ancient games that took place here. The Sanctuary of Altis is spectacular and steeped in history. An ancient sanctuary dedicated to Greek gods, the site is home to many masterpieces, including some by the famous artist Phidias. Nearby are the Stadium and Palestra, where games were held and men were trained in athletics.
With its extensive archaeological site, Olympia remains at the heart of our civilization, and it’s hard to remain insensitive to the weight of its history.
Distance covered: 100km – 2 hours’ drive. Overnight in a hotel in Olympia.
Day 6
Olympia - Naupacte
Naupacte
Heading north towards Patras. We cross the new bridge over the Isthmus of Corinth, a magnificent work of contemporary art. Arrive at Naupacte, a picturesque hilltop town high above the sea. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the mountains of the hinterland, discover the town’s rich historical past, or simply enjoy the beautiful walks along the seafront. Why not think back to the Battle of Lepanto, which took place off the coast of the city in 1571, pitting the Ottoman and Christian fleets against each other in one of the greatest naval battles in history.
Distance covered: 160 km – 2h30 drive. Overnight in a hotel in Lepanto.
Day 7
Naupacte - Delphi
Site of Apollo Delphi
Today you’ll get an early start, if possible, in the direction of Delphi. Be warned: the road along the Gulf of Corinth is quite winding. Fortunately, it offers magnificent panoramic views, alternating between sea and mountain landscapes. Arrive at the ancient city of Delphi, which for centuries has been called “the navel of the earth” by Zeus. Rich in myth and history, Delphi remains one of the most important religious sites of antiquity, where the Oracle of Apollo was held. Set in lush surroundings on a mountainside with magnificent views, you’ll need 3 hours for a full tour of the site and its museum.
Spend the evening in nearby Arachova, a more pleasant place to stay than modern Delphi.
Distance covered: 130 km – 2h30 drive. Overnight in a hotel in Arachova.
Day 8
Arachova - Athens
The Monastery of Osios Loukas
Back to Athens. The road winds through the mountains from one valley to the next, passing by the foot of Mount Parnassus. If you have time, it’s worth visiting the monastery of Hosios Loukas, scattered among the mountains of Phocis. A majestic reminder of the Byzantine Empire.
Later, return your vehicle to the airport and hopefully return home with memories to last a lifetime!

– Arrive early at Delphi to avoid the few tourists who may come to visit the site and find themselves in the middle of the traces of history.
– In Kalavrita, if you’d like to take the little cogwheel train, stop at the Zachlorou station. From here you can either hike up to the monastery – but beware, it’s a steep climb – or head down to the Vikos Gorge. Keep an eye out for incoming trains and take a flashlight into the tunnels.
– Epidaurus has a magical atmosphere. We like to sit in the middle of the theater for a moment of reflection, meditation or contemplation, as you wish. The place deserves a few minutes of devoted attention.
– If possible, we recommend flying out on the ninth day. This will allow you to spend more time in Athens and even take the time to drive to Cape Sounion to see the Temple of Poseidon.
