Greece has so many must-sees that one trip wouldn’t be enough to discover them all! However, it’s essential to visit Athens at least once, where the Acropolis is enthroned. Also on the Greek mainland, Delphi is home to numerous remains from the Classical and Hellenistic eras. To the north-west of this ancient city are the Meteora, whose rock formations have fascinated travellers since Antiquity. And don’t miss the beautiful city of Thessaloniki, the country’s second-largest conurbation.
To the south of the Aegean Sea, the island of Crete shines with its spectacular scenery and historic remains. Heraklion bears witness to its Minoan past. Further north, the Cyclades archipelago is a veritable paradise on earth, with idyllic beaches. Each island has its own unique charm, from Santorini to Mykonos, via Paros and Naxos.
There are many other sites that deserve to be featured here, as Greece’s regions are so rich in cultural and natural heritage!
From the Acropolis to Knossos Palace, there are thousands of archaeological sites to visit in Greece! And many of them have a museum or interpretation center to help you understand the remains. The Acropolis Museum in Athens, for example, is one of the country’s largest cultural centers.
Greece also boasts a varied landscape, ideal for sports. Walking enthusiasts can organize hikes through the magnificent panoramas of Crete or along the mythical paths of Mount Olympus. Trekkers generally prefer Meteora and the Pelion mountains.
Do you enjoy water sports? If so, the islands of Mykonos and Rhodes are ideal for scuba diving, kitesurfing or windsurfing.
Finally, if you’re looking for a break from all that adventure, why not relax on a beach in the Cyclades?
Ten Greek airports welcome direct flights from France: Athens, Thessaloniki, Zakynthos, Heraklion, Chania, Cos, Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu. You can fly from the French airports of Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Paris-Orly, Marseille, Toulouse, Nice, Lyon, Nantes and Montpellier.
However, some routes are only available in season. Air France, Transavia France, Aegean Airlines, Sky Express and easyJet are among the most popular airlines. To easily manage your ticket purchase, take advantage of bynativ’s booking engine.
The duration of your flight depends on your departure and destination airports. It is generally between 2h30 and 3h30. There is a time difference of one hour.
Of course, Greece’s membership of the euro zone makes your trip a whole lot easier, both in terms of visas and currency exchange: all you need is a passport or identity card. Forget your ancient Greek lessons, though: today’s Greek language is a far cry from ancient Greek.
Now that we’ve covered what’s important, let’s move on to what’s really important: Greek gastronomy! Take the time to savor its world-famous ingredients, including olive oil and feta cheese. Finally, sample some of the country’s emblematic dishes, such as moussaka, souvlaki and Greek salad!
